Carmine Mauro Daprile: 'Moon'

Date 23.09.13 – 07.10.13

Time Billboards

Location Bath Road

The Moon is a series of works by Italian photographer Carmine Mauro Daprile with UK cosplayers.

Newly commissioned photographs; #29 “Wake up Bristol” and ‘#34’, will be installed on billboards along the Bath Road in Bristol for two weeks in Autumn 2013. The billboards will pop up in-between the existing advertising panels, but will bear no logos or slogans. Instead, passersby are presented with two photographs featuring fantastical characters created by southwest based cosplayers set against startling visions of the future.

The Moon series began in February 2013 during In Between Time Festival when the artist organised a Bristol city centre flashmob with UK cosplayers. Daprile is interested in interrupting everyday experiences to manipulate our perceptions of realities. Following the flashmob the artist worked with cosplayers to create six new photographic images, two of which can be seen on the Bath Road billboards.

Launch event: Thurs 26 September, 6-8pm - Bocabar, Paintworks, Bristol

Join the artist, South West cosplayers and commissioning partners for a drinks reception at Bocabar.

The Moon is a co-commission by Bristol City Council, In Between Time, and Bristol Temple Quarter commissions. BTQ commissions are coordinated by Watershed, Knowle West Media Centre and MAYK, with support from Bristol City Council and Arts Council England. They will pop up, excite and re-invent perceptions and potentials.

Steven Claydon’s work brings together objects recalling historical artefacts, cultural ephemera and geological samples, skillfully mixing different cultures and periods of history. Merging reality with fiction, and appearing at once meaningful and useless, Claydon’s works oscillate between an idea of truth and fantasy, seeming to offer a fragmented image of a future civilisation’s past. He will talk about his practice and new commission in Bristol.
